A one-day Halloween Mah Jong event bringing together friendly competition, Open Play, great food, unique tiles, and plenty of spooky fun at Rapscallion in Lawrence, MA
Monster MAHJ is your chance to choose how you want to play. Test your skills in our three-tier Mah Jong Tournamentor skip the competition and spend the afternoon enjoying Open Play with fellow Mah Jong players.
Tournament players can choose the level that best fits their game, with timed rounds designed to keep play moving while still creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere. And yes—we’ll have prizes for our Tournament winners!
There’s also a Monster MAHJ twist: every table will be played with non-traditional tiles. Throughout the event, we’ll feature sets from OMM, Bespoke, Mah Jong Row & Co., as well as other brands, giving you the opportunity to play with a variety of beautiful and unique tile sets.
We’ll kick things off at 11:00 AM with check-in, brick oven pizza lunch, and time to grab a drink before play begins. Tournament and Open Play run from 12:00–3:00 PM.
And because it’s Halloween, costumes are encouraged! We’ll have a Best Costume prize, additional Halloween-themed fun, and special Halloween cocktails available for purchase at the bar.

Our Fall League is a six week league designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced-intermediate players who know the basics and are looking for more consistent play, a little friendly competition, and the fun of being part of a league.
Whether you've recently completed MAHJ 101, attended Guided Play, participated in Open Play, or simply want more opportunities to play, this league offers the perfect way to sharpen your skills, build confidence, and enjoy four summer evenings around the Mahjong table.
Unlike a formal lesson, League is about playing. You'll be seated with fellow players at a similar stage, giving everyone the opportunity to learn through repetition, develop strategy, and become more comfortable making decisions at the table.
And because a little competition makes everything more fun, we'll keep things lively with weekly door prizes, league standings, and awards for our top finishers.
More than anything, Fall League is about building confidence, improving your game, and spending six fun fall evenings with fellow Mahjong enthusiasts.

What to Expect
Over the course of six weeks, players will gather weekly at The Jade for organized, timed play in a supportive and welcoming environment.
Players are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy dinner and drinks before play begins or order throughout the evening. The Jade offers a wonderful menu, delicious cocktails, and a beautiful atmosphere that makes League Night something to look forward to each week. We will be playing in the private room in the back of the restaurant.
All games will follow National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules, with each round timed. If no player achieves Mahjong by the end of a round, the game will be considered a wall game.
Each week, you'll rotate tables, experience different playing styles, and continue developing both your strategy and confidence.
We'll celebrate friendly competition throughout the league with:

Open Play is a relaxed Mahjong session designed for players who already know the basics and simply want to gather, play, and enjoy the game together.
Tables will be set and ready when you arrive, and you’ll rotate through games with other players throughout the session. While an instructor will be present to help keep things running smoothly, Open Play is primarily about enjoying the rhythm of the game, building confidence through practice, and connecting with others around the table.
Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills, meet fellow Mahjong players, or simply spend a few hours playing the game you love, Open Play offers a welcoming space to do just that.

Our Mahjong 101 series is perfect for complete beginners or anyone looking to build a strong foundation in the game. Across two thoughtfully structured sessions, we’ll guide you step-by-step—from understanding the tiles and reading the NMJL card to building hands and learning the flow of gameplay.
